Environmental and Community Interests Come First

Over the past 13 years serving Edmonds in the Legislative branch working alongside three administrations, I’ve seen the impact of poor code or code enforcement, incomplete or inadequate environmental documents and unchecked development that has tremendous impact on our environment and infrastructure (stormwater, sewer). As someone who cares deeply about our environment and this community, it’s been hard to watch all the pocket forest being razed, open spaces disappearing and our watersheds continuing to erode and suffer. It’s time for both the Administrative and Legislative branches start listening to our voices and work together to protect what makes this town the “Gem of the Puget Sound”.

Because of my extensive work with our Local and State Salmon Recovery Councils, I’ve seen the unintended consequences of bad political decisions for development and transportation and then the wonders of restoration.

My knowledge and passion for preserving our natural spaces and seeing the remarkable assets of this coastal town and meeting many scientists, it is imperative that we take heed and change codes as the impacts of climate change are notable and our watersheds must be restored. And, what many folks don’t know is our local sewer system has yet to comply with the Department of Ecology’s required nitrogen levels being expelled in the Sound. Considering all the developments both locally and in surrounding jurisdictions, we must think of how infrastructure is being stressed and speak on behalf of the environment.  With my experience in municipal finance and my understanding of Edmonds’ history, I’m committed to helping focus our policymakers and stakeholders to pivot toward a future where open spaces thrive, watersheds are restored, and our community’s values are at the heart of every decision we make.  Our future generations will thank us.
